AFRICAN PRESENCE IN BRAZILIAN CINEMA
Film Series
JULY 30 - AUGUST 1, 2010
As part of its ongoing ADFF Spring and Summer Film Series at Teachers College, Columbia University, ArtMattan Films presents the “African Presence in Brazilian Cinema" Film Series.
In 2003, ArtMattan Films put together a series entitled "Cinema Favela: Celebrating The African Presence in Brazilian Cinema" at Anthology Film Archives. That program marked a rare moment in the history of Brazilian cinema in the US. In 2009, in the context of FESPACO 2009- Pan-African Film and Television Festival in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso - a group of Afro-Brazilians filmmakers presented the First African Showcase of Afro-Brazilian Filmmakers in Africa that was an important moment in the history of the festival.
The Afro-Latinos are still fighting for recognition of the unique contribution they made to the Latino identity and the world. Brazil is the Latin American country with the largest population of African descendents out of Africa. However, Afro-Brazilian themes in Brazilian cinema are limited, and the participation of Afro-Brazilians in the film industry is rather small.
Afro-Latinos, in general, are not easily found behind a camera. However, filmmakers of different origins have worked on the theme of the Afro-Latino experience in general and the Afro-Brazilian experience in particular. The names of Tomas Guttierrez Alea from Cuba, Leonardo Ricagni from Uruguay, Paulo Betti from Brazil and Nelson Pereira dos Santos from Brazil come to mind.
We are bringing to you a selection of films that celebrate the African presence in Brazilian cinema with a combination of some of the films showcased in FESPACO, some of those screened in the 2003 series, and some new titles that have come out in the past few years.
